In her 30 year legal career as business affairs director at Richard Frankel Productions, a partner at Sendroff & Baruch, and now as of counsel with Lazarus & Harris, Carter Anne McGowan has been on the production counsel team for over 150 Broadway, Off-Broadway, and national touring productions, including, in addition to the productions represented by Lazarus & Harris, The Producers, Hairspray, & Juliet, Stomp, Sweeney Todd, Beautiful: The Carole King Story, The Band’s Visit, Network, and Burn This.
In the academic arena, she served as an Associate Professor and Director of the Arts Management Program at LIU/Post and taught entertainment and performing arts law in the Arts Management programs at the University of Kentucky, Metropolitan College, and Brooklyn College. She has lectured on entertainment law topics for Vanderbilt Law School, the University of Iowa Law School, the New York State Bar Association, Lafayette College, Ithaca College, the Women’s Project, and at the American Society for Theatre Research, and her scholarly works have been published in the Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Journal, the Cornell Journal of Law of Public Policy, the Seton Hall Sports Law Journal, the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal, and in the book In the Arena, published by the New York State Bar Association. She received her undergraduate degree from St. John’s University, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in history and a professional certificate in sports management. She received her law degree from Cornell Law School, an MFA in Theatre with a concentration in Performing Arts Management from CUNY/Brooklyn College, and another MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Carter has been recognized by SuperLawyers as one of the leading attorneys in New York since 2021 and among the Best Women Lawyers in New York since 2022.
